German is one of the world’s most popular languages. Its speakers make up a fourth of the European Union’s population and boast a powerful international economic presence. If you’re interested in learning the language, there are numerous options to choose from – from casual conversation clubs, online classes and immersion programs that offer intensive language study and cultural exploration.
The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) offers ten-week evening courses for all levels of German, from complete beginner to proficiency. Courses run on weekday evenings and include two lessons each week of listening, reading and speaking. A full list of current modules is available from CLIE.
Our partner school in Highgate is a beautiful Victorian house that is home to 24 well-equipped classrooms and a multi-purpose language room, all of which are located within easy reach of central London. Students benefit from a comfortable atmosphere where they feel it’s safe to make mistakes, which are treated as learning opportunities.
Students are encouraged to speak as much as possible in the class, which allows them to develop their listening skills and become confident talking about their own lives and opinions. The school uses a comprehensive curriculum that prepares children well for their first year of primary school. Pupils are taught to read in both English and German, from their earliest days, and they are expected to analyse free-verse poetry in both languages and use the grammatical rules of German, such as rhyme, alliteration and onomatopoeia, in their writing in both languages.
