You may not be happy with the constant nags from your iPhone to update to a new iOS version. If so, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s very easy to turn updates off on your iPhone.
Apple has recently added toggles to the Automatic Updates feature in iOS 13.6, which give you more granular control over the downloading and installation of software updates. This is especially useful if you’re concerned about using too much cellular data while traveling.
Go to Settings
There are a number of reasons you may want to turn updates off on your iPhone. For one thing, you may not like the added battery drain that comes with downloading and installing iOS updates automatically. Alternatively, you might not be comfortable with the idea of having your phone constantly displaying “Install Now” and “Remind Me Later” messages that ask you to install updates you don’t want or need.
Another reason you might want to turn off automatic updates on your iPhone is if you’re on a limited data plan and you don’t want your phone to use up all your data. Thankfully, both the App Store and the Play Store let you disable automatic app downloads over cellular data so that you can limit your monthly cellular bill to a more manageable amount.
The first step to disabling automatic app downloads is to go to Settings on your device and find the Apps & Data section. Here, you’ll see a list of all the apps on your device and their associated data usage.
You’ll also see a button for Disable Auto Updates that allows you to disable automatic updates on apps by category. If you’re on a limited data plan, this will save you money and help your phone stay charged longer.
However, you’ll need to be careful about which apps you choose to disable. It’s a good idea to check each of your apps’ features to make sure that they’re still up-to-date.
For example, it’s best not to disable automatic app updates for games or other apps that you don’t often use. These apps may need to be updated frequently, but they’re likely not a necessity for your everyday life.
It’s also important to check the size of your apps so that you don’t download updates that are too big for your device. If you have a limited data plan, this can be frustrating and can cause your phone to run out of charge faster than normal.
Go to iTunes & App Store
Auto-updates are a great way to keep your apps up to date without having to constantly open up the App Store and hit “Update All”. But they can also cause your phone to consume a lot of mobile data, which can be a problem if you’re on a limited cellular plan.
One way to cut back on the amount of cellular data you use is to set your iPhone to only update apps via WiFi. This will limit how much your phone uses cellular data and save you money in the long run.
This is especially helpful if you often run out of data before the end of the month or have a low battery life. Moreover, it can help to ensure that you’re always running the latest versions of your favorite apps, which can make your experience better and fix any bugs.
However, you’ll need to disable the automatic iOS update feature if you want to do this. That’s because iOS automatically downloads new software updates over Wi-Fi whenever your iPhone is connected to a network, as well as when it’s charging or asleep.
Disabling this feature lets you choose when your iPhone will install software updates and what version of the operating system it’ll be running. You can also set your iPhone to only download updates over WiFi if you’re on a limited data plan or have low battery life.
In order to turn off automatic iOS updates, you’ll need to open the Settings app and scroll down to the General tab. Next, tap the Install iOS Updates toggle switch to turn it off.
Then, move the Download iOS Updates slider to off/white. That will stop all future iOS updates from downloading over cellular data.
This is also useful if you’re on a limited phone data plan or have low battery life and need to get your apps up to date. This will ensure that your apps aren’t wasting any of your precious cellular data and battery power.
Go to Updates
Many people don’t like having their iPhone automatically downloading software updates – it takes up valuable space on their phone and can be a little annoying if you don’t want it to do this. However, there are ways to stop this from happening without sacrificing the functionality of your iOS device.
You can disable automatic software updates in iOS by going to Settings > General. You’ll find two switches there: one for Download iOS Updates and another for Install iOS Updates. To disable the automatic installation of updates, turn off both switches.
Alternatively, you can also manually install updates on your iPhone. You’ll need to enter your passcode to unlock your device and then tap Download and Install. It can take a while for the update to download and install, but it’s worth it in the end.
Some updates need to be installed manually for security reasons. These include Rapid Security Responses, which deliver important security improvements more quickly before they become a part of a larger software update.
To disable the automatic download of large apps when you’re on cellular data, go to Settings and select App Store. Swipe down until you see the toggle next to “Automatic Downloads” under CELLULAR DATA.
Disabling this option can help you save a lot of data on your iPhone by not downloading any apps and updates when you’re on cellular data. You can also offload unused apps to save even more space on your phone.
When an app update isn’t able to be downloaded, your iPhone will ask you if you’d like it to remove the app. If you choose to continue, it will delete the content on your device and reinstall it once the update is completed.
Go to Cellular Data
Your iPhone or iPad has an easy-to-use setting where you can turn cellular data on or off. This is a handy feature for saving on data overage charges.
Cellular data, also called mobile data in many countries, allows you to use the internet via a cellular connection when Wi-Fi isn’t available. It’s usually the easiest option for connecting to the internet, but it can be a problem if you’re in an area that has poor cellular coverage or if there are a lot of people using cellular data in your neighborhood.
If you’re having trouble with cellular data, check whether your carrier has issued a cellular network update that may be causing the issue. These updates improve cellular connectivity and can fix the issue you’re having.
Another option to try is restarting your phone. To do this on an iPhone, press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo. For an iPad, press and hold the power button until you hear a beep or see “Slide to Power Off” appear near the top of the display.
A reboot will reset your iPhone’s software and re-establish cellular connectivity. If it still doesn’t work, however, you’ll need to troubleshoot further.
If your cellular data isn’t working because of a software issue, updating to the latest version of iOS could solve the problem. This is especially important if you’re running an outdated version of iOS, which may have bugs that are causing the issue you’re experiencing.
