How are reserve residences different from other student housing?
Our campus-based residences are designed to support the unique needs of students and offer a welcoming, residential experience. Whether you’re a first-year student, a returning graduate, or a member of the military, our residences are committed to supporting your academic and personal growth during your time at UGA.
Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students who serve as your peers and mentors during your time here at UGA. They help you form and grow your community, make sure all our residents feel welcome, and work to provide a safe and engaging living environment for everyone in our communities.
RAs also lead social events, volunteer in the community, and serve as an advocate for our residents’ wellbeing and success. They’re students first, and their commitment to you is reflected in their dedication to providing the best possible housing and living experience on campus.
When you live at a reserve, you’ll have more restrictions on how you can use your land than you would when owning or renting a house or apartment. Your reserve lands may be subject to government rights-of-way, such as power transmission lines or highways, which can cut off your useable space.
The federal government also offers a range of programs that assist First Nations residents on reserves. These include income assistance, Jordan’s Principle, urban programs, and initiatives for improving drinking water, wastewater systems and community infrastructure on reserves.
These programs, services and initiatives are available to Indigenous and northern Canadians through a range of organizations, including First Nations governments and non-government organisations. These programs are designed to improve the quality of life for First Nations peoples, including their education, health and well-being.
On-reserve housing is often less expensive than off-reserve housing, as the federal government subsidizes the cost of building and renovating homes on reserves through a variety of grants and loans. In addition, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has established an on-reserve housing loan program, which can provide funds to build or improve your home on a reserve.
While there are a number of factors to consider when choosing your location for a new home, the key is to consider where you’d like to live based on your personal preferences and lifestyle. For example, if you’d like to be closer to downtown, choose a location near major highways and public transportation routes or a place close to schools, parks and other important areas of interest.
