For years, law enforcement agencies and courts have been dealing with a number of cumbersome manual processes for filing warrants. These outdated methods often result in errors that are both frustrating and potentially dangerous for officers in the field.
Thankfully, the DeWine Administration has implemented new technology to help improve the process and provide officers with a more efficient tool for removing impaired drivers from our streets and ensuring criminals are held accountable. In order to reduce the amount of time it takes to file a warrant and increase accuracy, the administration created a free, statewide system called Ewarrants.
The eWarrants interface is a shared information technology system that is available at no charge to all courts and agencies in Ohio and works with the record management systems many counties already use. The free system improves the thoroughness, accuracy and timeliness of warrant and protection order submissions to LEADS and NCIC for officer safety and public safety, as well as ensures the system meets all state and federal security policy standards.
In addition to increasing efficiency, the eWarrants system also fosters transparency through digital transmission of warrant data. This allows authorized personnel to review the warrant information at their respective locations, eliminating a potential for mishandling or miscommunication. The eWarrants system also helps to reduce the burden on court staff by providing an automated, streamlined workflow that requires less paperwork and a more efficient process.
The eWarrants system can be accessed anywhere and from any internet connected device, making it easy for Judges to review and approve warrants in the field or while away from their desks. It offers an expansive library of state-specific warrant templates and features a recorded, FaceTime-like video chat that can be used for oaths, questions and answers and other required information.
